Yeah, so I invite myself to comment on the pathetic progress that the City under the ‘leadership’ of Karen Farbridge, has made in convincing the soft drink bottle and canners to get on board with a deposit/return system like the booze makers. Well, the brave Farbridge has had someone set her up a blog, so much more Web 2.0 of her to spin out tales of what nice things she and her gang are up to. Only problem is that in a Joseph Goebbels sort of way, nothing negative or critical ever gets past the censor/moderator. so this happy, green, green face is painted on, to hide the goings on in the back rooms with the expectation that come election time present business better be wrapped up. Next term is up for grabs and the required hours have been put in for full pension.
Bunny Safari had successfully got her comment on plastic bags published and I was following up on her suggestions.
Anyways here’s my comments to das mayor which you’ll never see on her blog :
“I agree with Bunny that both retailers and manufacturers must be held liable and responsible for their additions to the waste stream. Beverage bottlers and canners were hardly mentioned in the City’s “master” plan and yet they are one of the most visible and worst offenders. I guess your ‘thinking’ is, let the City tackle the easy stuff, because small victories while being close to meaningless, leaves the staff with a warm and fuzzy feeling that they’ve accomplished something, which in itself must be a rare experience for people in their positions.
I’m not even going to bring up the reality of going into a hardware store in need of three screws of a larger size than what originally came bundled in the product’s ‘installation pac’, only to be confronted with a large cardboard card with a plastic bubble containing twelve of the size you need three of.
The typical response by administrators who have it in their power to effect the changes necessary has been, in my experience, one of two :1.) it’s not MY problem or more typically 2.) it’s Not my department, I don’t know who to direct you to, but I do know that’s not covered by this department.
I keep hearing your people rave on about how Guelph wants to regain a leadership role with regards to anything ‘green’ (the eco shade of green) Well I’ll tell you, if no one else will, (and you have to be capable of listening) that that shade of green can’t be painted on, that particular shade of green comes from a well-thought out regimen of fertilization, nurturing and care.Try thinking about that instead of where the next opportunity to be photographed with smiley “yes” men will fit in your date book.”
And that got tossed by the censorship police.
