Censored at the mayor’s blog

June 10, 2008

Yeah, so I invite myself to comment on the pathetic progress that the City under the ‘leadership’ of Karen Farbridge, has made in convincing the soft drink bottle and canners to get on board with a deposit/return system like the booze makers. Well, the brave Farbridge has had someone set her up a blog, so much more Web 2.0 of her to spin out tales of what nice things she and her gang are up to. Only problem is that in a Joseph Goebbels sort of way, nothing negative or critical ever gets past the censor/moderator. so this happy, green, green face is painted on, to hide the goings on in the back rooms with the expectation that come election time present business better be wrapped up. Next term is up for grabs and the required hours have been put in for full pension.

Bunny Safari had successfully got her comment on plastic bags published and I was following up on her suggestions.

Anyways here’s my comments to das mayor which you’ll never see on her blog :

“I agree with Bunny that both retailers and manufacturers must be held liable and responsible for their additions to the waste stream. Beverage bottlers and canners were hardly mentioned in the City’s “master” plan and yet they are one of the most visible and worst offenders. I guess your ‘thinking’ is, let the City tackle the easy stuff, because small victories while being close to meaningless, leaves the staff with a warm and fuzzy feeling that they’ve accomplished something, which in itself must be a rare experience for people in their positions.
I’m not even going to bring up the reality of going into a hardware store in need of three screws of a larger size than what originally came bundled in the product’s ‘installation pac’, only to be confronted with a large cardboard card with a plastic bubble containing twelve of the size you need three of.
The typical response by administrators who have it in their power to effect the changes necessary has been, in my experience, one of two :1.) it’s not MY problem or more typically 2.) it’s Not my department, I don’t know who to direct you to, but I do know that’s not covered by this department.
I keep hearing your people rave on about how Guelph wants to regain a leadership role with regards to anything ‘green’ (the eco shade of green) Well I’ll tell you, if no one else will, (and you have to be capable of listening) that that shade of green can’t be painted on, that particular shade of green comes from a well-thought out regimen of fertilization, nurturing and care.Try thinking about that instead of where the next opportunity to be photographed with smiley “yes” men will fit in your date book.”

And that got tossed by the censorship police.

Hello World!

April 21, 2008

Welcome to boyandgirlcott at WordPress.com. We hope to provide a list of corporates and their affiliates that for one reason or another should feel the brunt of a concerted effort to avoid their products. If these companies only care about their bottom line in a financial sense, then we feel it’s time to use economic clout to affect their business strategies. Feel free to nominate your perceived worst offenders with your reasons why. And the reasons can range from non-existent customer service, human rights violations, deceptive marketing, modified genetics, disregard for environmental sustainability or planned obsolescence, etc.
We want this to be the “go to spot” for concerned finger-pointers and later for all the people who want to tell us about all the good companies they know of, we’ll start another blog called “Spam Bin” where those/that company can be stored.
These corporates like to hide who they really are, so if you can trace your offender back to the mothership, the effectiveness of this campaign will be amplified. Silver shovels may be awarded to those who can dig up the best dirt and we’re considering rewards for the best mobilization techniques.

My Issues

April 19, 2008

Better methods of conjoining bicycles with public transit. Racks on the backs and fronts of city buses, commuter trains with bikeage cars, bike boxes in bus/air terminals.

Reduction in the production of babies. They’re cute and cuddly and they’re putting a hellova strain on an already over-taxed and stressed system, who’s trying very hard to find her balance and regenerate from past transgressions. The Earth, our mother.

A concerted effort towards producer responsibility of beverage manufacturers to install a deposit/return system for plastic bottles and aluminum cans, thereby recycling material that is now a major litter liability.

End all wars and ‘peacekeeping actions’ for a while.

Know the “War on drugs” for what it is, a vicious grab at monopoly. The CIA funds its covert ops by importing drugs en masse, realizing there will always be demand as long as it’s created using sophisticated marketing techniques developed through years of scientific research. Know also that the “War on drugs” is a class war. The North America Corridor is designed to be its pipe line.

Retract the income tax on personal labour, and shift the responsibility for the party in power’s need for new upholstery, buildings and DingleBerrys® to corporate taxation and balance all the years of subsidies, handouts and incentive plans. Meant for their toddling start-up, corporations are now stomping on the people who funded their rise.

Cease corporate agri-business and allow farmers to regain their stature as stewards of the land. Leave behind ideas of genetic engineering as a cul de sac in science’s mad rush for information. Get a clue about turfgrass lawns in every sub-burb. Eat foods that are produced locally from small, diversified, well-run, and if possible organic, farms.

Do get an economic plan in place whereby homeless persons and government ‘workers’ job-share six months on/six months off, giving the homeless plenty of money to get through the rest of the year and a chance to visit exotic locales for ‘conferences’, while giving gov’t persons a view of reality and a chance to take off the blinders or live in cardboard homes, whichever suits. No less progress will be made, maybe some positive change.

Shun reliance on the automobile wherever practical. War for oil, drinking and driving, salting every highway & byway in winter, drive-thru fast food, the need for speed, mortgaging one’s future to pay for a conveyance, the Exxon Valdezes, motocross over any/everything, the paving of paradise, when will this trend be reversed?

Reduce/reverse police funding. These are corrupt weaponized goon squads protecting a government that acts like a mafia, garnering finances thru spreading fear of crime, while skimming monies from activities like the numbers game(lotteries), sale of drugs(tobacco, alcohol, etc), protection racket(mandatory insurances), prostitution(oppression of workers and their rights), etcetera.

End hemp-o-phobia. This plant has valuable fibre/properties that far outshines the petrochemical synthetics that came to replace it.

Consider not consuming based solely on peer pressures or media hype.

Reconsider marketing boards, agri-business subsidies, mono-culture cropping, mega-abattoirs, feedlot culture, feed-to-weightgain ratios, employment agencies, rewards for baby-making thru child tax credits, the state of education, NAFTA et al, reprehensible/representative democracy, television culture, cow’s milk, trips to the moon, ‘normalizing’ aboriginal culture, rail travel, the bottom line, …

Improve the state of education to the point of it being all about higher learning and not a parroted repetition of misguided dogma and rhetoric from jaded self-serving elitist professors with covert ties to industry. The process of aquiring knowledge should be paramount, not the products and doctrines of history.

Surgically remove the current medical mafia.
With the power to write their own ticket and money enough to hire receptionist/accountants, wait times will only increase. Being sent to one specialist buddy after another, for bloodwork and x-rays and cat scans and spinal taps ensures that everyone with doctor in front of their name makes their imported car payments on time, with plenty of cash left over. Sending patients on a merry-go-round of tests ensures they never have to make a diagnosis that may come back to haunt AND they perpetuate the share-the-wealth buddy system.

Finding our inner voice, bring it outside, use it to SHOUT if you must. It’s not the time to be timid or apathetic, but time to form an opinion, share it with others, refine it from feedback, then speak with confidence. Make yourself heard, use the internet as your temporary democracy. Enable town hall discussions, even in your living room, build community, even on your block. Don’t be bull-headed, someone may express your sentiments more eloquently than you, let them, encourage them.
Peace
Bicycle

A true choice available to all, in elections of representative democracy by requiring/mandating that every ballot have a box at the bottom that reads “none of the above”. No more the choice of the lesser of two/three/four evils, but a majority for none of the above would indicate the populace requires more substance, less bull. A consensus that the presented platforms are inadequate and in need of revision/improvement before the representative/or not gains approval.
Or perhaps, one vote per person per issue using this new electronic communication network. Saves on building all these edifices to duplication and glorification of legislation on all three levels.

Reconsider the state of unions. Powerful unions have achieved HUGE gains for their members, while leaving behind other workers to be regulated by minimum wages and no benefits, widening not narrowing the distance between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’. So excessive have been their demands and expectations that owners/corporations have instituted a global search for other workers to oppress/exploit and have subverted ‘third world governments’ to resist/crush union organizing or even basic human/worker’s rights. The idea of one union for all workers globally has a certain appeal as does guaranteed annual incomes and having the admins run the machines.
